To say the least, Black Friday is a serious day for consumers and brands alike. It’s all about getting a jump on holiday shopping and taking advantage of all of the best deals. This creates the perfect environment for brands to launch new, creative, and exciting promotions. These brands hit the ground running and had the most successful promotions of the season.
Hardee’s had an excellent promotion to capitalize on all the Black Friday traffic. Though Hardee’s does not sell anything typically promoted on Black Friday, they knew that shoppers would definitely be hungry during a long day of buying and came up with a promotion to draw business away from other fast food chains. Customers could go online and enter the codes they received on their 30 ounce drink cups to win a prize from Bass Pro Shop. This included either an Instant Win Game where customers could receive binoculars, a hydration pack, or a gear bag, or they could be entered into the Grand Prize Sweepstakes which included all three of the smaller prizes, along with an 8-person tent. Each customer who entered a code would also be granted a $1 off coupon for a Hardee’s Original Thickburger combo. This promotion shows great initiative and creative thinking on the part of Hardee’s!
In order to boost spending during the holidays, U.S. Bank ran the Your Season to Shine Sweepstakes from November 15th to December 31st. Every purchase with a branded, U.S. Bank credit or debit card automatically entered customers into the sweepstakes, thus encouraging customers to use their cards for purchases they would already be making. This promotion used the simple knowledge that people would be out shopping on Black Friday and that those customers should be rewarded for using their U.S. Bank credit and debit cards for their purchases. Five $500 U.S. Bank Visa Gift Cards will be awarded per week for seven weeks followed by one Grand Prize drawing on January 8, 2017 with a total of four Grand Prize winners. Two grand prize winners will have their net credit card purchases made during the promotion period paid off from $3,000-$10,000 and the other two grand prize winners will have their net debit card purchases paid off from $2,000-$5,000. By automatically entering card users into a sweepstakes that could potentially pay for the entirety of their holiday shopping, the U.S. Bank Your Season to Shine promotion focused on giving back to consumers this holiday season.
In the week leading up to Black Friday, November 18 – November 25, Old Navy gave away $100,000 every day to one lucky winner as part of their “Instant Happy” sweepstakes. Old Navy definitely got people invested by partnering with Chipotle Mexican Grill, Coca-Cola, Fandango, and Tiny Prints to give away smaller scratch-off prizes, some of which were free chips and guacamole from Chipotle Mexican Grill, movie tickets from Fandango, and free shipping from OldNavy.com. These incentives gave consumers a reason to start their Black Friday shopping even earlier!
Extending from November 25 – December 19, participants can load new, digital coupons to their Kroger accounts each day to take advantage of a variety of freebies. Participants can also receive daily reminders via text so as not to miss out on any of Kroger’s digital coupons including $2 off Private Selection Frozen Desserts, a FREE box of Dove Ice Cream or Sorbet, and 20% off Outback Steakhouse Gift Card. The digital coupons make it easy for customers to know about the deals and feel that they are too good to pass up. The daily coupons give consumers a reason to go back to Kroger’s day-after-day compared to an average shopping schedule of once or twice a week.
World Market employed promo codes, discounts, special offers, markdowns, and free shipping through redeemable online coupons by implementing the tagline, “Shop World Market online and put incredible deals in your cart!” to their website, thus making “coupon clipping” a fun and exciting shopping experience. Like the Kroger’s promotion, the online deals give customers easy access. World Market also added incentives for customers to come to the store on both Black Friday and Saturday. The first 100 customers who came to the store on Black Friday were granted a free reusable tote bag and a $10 same-day gift certificate. On Saturday and Sunday, customers who spent $40 at the store received two movie tickets, while supplies lasted. This promotion was a great example of utilizing both in-store and online deals to encourage shoppers to spend on Black Friday weekend.
Whether it’s creating a unique shopping experience, enticing consumers with freebies, or encouraging social sharing and a sense of community within a brand, these five promotions show that you need to give something to get something when it comes to Black Friday deals.
